Aspects

Read angular relationships carefully before turning chart geometry into symbolic conversations.

Chapter 1

Aspects

Geometry becomes a question

Aspects connect chart factors through measured angles. Astrologers use those connections to explore cooperation, tension, and competing concerns, but the geometric measurement and its interpretation are different things. This volume introduces the major aspects, explains orbs, and distinguishes single relationships from larger patterns. Worked examples show how to calculate a separation and then frame a careful question about it. You will also learn why a close aspect is not automatically the most important fact about a person.

An angle can be measured precisely while the conversation it invites still needs patience, context, and another person’s voice.

Chapter 1

Chapter 2

Aspects are conversations

Name both sides first

An aspect relates two positions measured along the zodiac, also called ecliptic longitude. The five major aspect angles commonly used in Western astrology are the conjunction at 0 degrees, sextile at 60, square at 90, trine at 120, and opposition at 180. A chart may include additional aspects, so check its key. In a modern psychological reading, name each planet’s concern before describing their connection. Mercury and Saturn can raise questions about thinking and responsibility. A square might frame friction between them, while a trine might frame cooperation. Both can have helpful and difficult expressions. Do not turn ease into virtue or tension into fault. The angle is measurable; the proposed meaning should remain open to discussion. Read it alongside the planets’ signs, houses, and the person’s actual circumstances.

Chapter 3

Orbs

How close is close

An orb is the permitted distance from an exact aspect. If two positions are 94 degrees apart, their separation differs from an exact square by four degrees. Whether an astrologer counts it depends on the orb allowed for that aspect and those bodies. There is no universal table: traditions, practitioners, and software settings differ. Use a declared rule while learning. You might choose a six-degree limit for major aspects in a practice exercise, without presenting it as a rule for every chart. With that choice, a square eight degrees from exact would be excluded from that exercise. Record the actual separation as well as the aspect name. This makes comparison possible and prevents an attractive interpretation from quietly changing the measurement rules. Closeness is one consideration among several, not a ranking of personal importance.

Precision begins with naming the distance, then admitting how much interpretation still lies beyond the measurement.

Chapter 4

Measuring separation and movement

Across the zodiac circle

Each sign spans 30 degrees. To compare positions, count around the zodiac: 10 degrees of Aries and 12 degrees of Cancer are 92 degrees apart, giving a square with a two-degree orb. Across the end of the circle, 29 degrees of Pisces and 1 degree of Aries are only two degrees apart, not 358 for aspect purposes. An applying aspect is moving towards exactness; a separating aspect is moving away from it. This requires the bodies’ motion information, not just their positions in a still diagram. Retrograde motion can complicate the sequence, so use an ephemeris, a table of calculated positions, when studying timing. First learn to measure the angle. Add movement only once you can explain what was calculated and what your chosen tradition makes of it.

Conjunction

Concerns in close company

☌
ease challenge: intense / neutralexample: Sun conjunct Mercury can prompt reflection on how closely opinions are linked with identity. Can you change your mind without feeling that you have lost yourself?

A conjunction centres on the same zodiac longitude. Modern readings explore a concentration or close blending of the planets’ concerns. The combination is not automatically harmonious: the roles involved matter. When two concerns feel inseparable, try naming each on its own before asking how they work together.

Sextile

An opening for participation

⚹
ease challenge: supportive but requires engagementexample: Venus sextile Mars might invite a small act that expresses appreciation, such as proposing a shared creative activity and checking whether it appeals to the other person.

A sextile centres on 60 degrees and is commonly read as a cooperative opening in modern Western astrology. Think of it as a relationship you can explore through participation, not a reward that must arrive. Look for the practical connection between the planets before describing the aspect as a talent.

Square

Making competing demands workable

□
ease challenge: challenging / growth-producingexample: Moon square Saturn might frame a tension between rest and duty. Try identifying which responsibilities are fixed and which could be renegotiated without deciding that the placement proves emotional deprivation.

A square centres on 90 degrees. Modern interpretation often uses it to explore competing demands, frustration, and the adjustments needed to act. Friction can motivate practice or simply be difficult; it does not automatically produce growth. Ask what would make the two concerns more workable in a specific situation.

Trine

Notice what flows easily

△
ease challenge: easy / supportiveexample: Sun trine Jupiter might invite reflection on an encouraging outlook. Check whether confidence supports a realistic undertaking or makes it tempting to promise more than you can deliver.

A trine centres on 120 degrees and is commonly associated with ease or reinforcement. Smooth cooperation can support a skill, but it can also leave an unhelpful habit unquestioned. Explore what the planets help each other do, and whether using that ease consciously would make a useful difference.

Opposition

Recognising both ends of a polarity

☍
ease challenge: relational / integrativeexample: Venus opposite Mars could prompt a conversation about accommodating someone and asserting a wish. Both can matter without assigning one role permanently to each partner.

An opposition centres on 180 degrees, placing two positions across the zodiac from one another. Modern readings explore polarity: concerns that feel separate or pull in different directions. Integration need not mean splitting everything equally. It can mean recognising what each concern needs and choosing a workable response at a particular time.

Quincunx

Adjusting between different approaches

⚻
ease challenge: awkward / adaptiveexample: Mars quincunx Neptune might frame the difficulty of turning an imaginative aim into action. Try defining one achievable step while leaving room for the idea to change.

A quincunx centres on 150 degrees and is often interpreted in modern astrology as a need for adjustment between differing approaches. It is not one of the five major aspects listed here. Traditional sign-based techniques handle such relationships differently, so do not assume their terms mean the same thing. Begin with a concrete mismatch rather than a diagnosis.

Stellium

Several functions in one setting

✦
ease challenge: intense focusexample: A tenth-house cluster may invite questions about public responsibility, but distinguish Mercury’s communication, Venus’s values, and Saturn’s limits rather than counting three identical indications of a career destiny.

A stellium is a grouping of several planets in one sign or house, not a single angular aspect. Definitions vary: some astrologers require three planets, others four, and rules about closeness or included bodies differ. State the convention you use and inspect the actual planets. Sharing a house does not mean every pair is conjunct.

T-Square

Three relationships, one configuration

T
ease challenge: high pressure / high motivationexample: As a geometric practice example, place the Moon at 10 degrees of Aries, Venus at 10 degrees of Libra, and Mars at 10 degrees of Cancer. Mars is the apex; the other two form the opposition.

A T-square is a configuration in which two planets oppose each other and both square a third, called the apex. All three connections must meet the chosen orb rules. Modern readings explore how the apex concern relates to the opposition; the pattern is not a forecast of crisis or a demand to find one missing cure.
